Andy, who played in ‘01, ‘02, and ‘06, is hoping to top his semifinal appearance here back in 2002 where he was defeated by Jan-Michael Gambill. 

 Heading the draw this year will help his chances, but it won’t be easy as he could clash with Tommy Haas(8) in the quarterfinals, Marat Safin(5) in the semis, and possibly Chile’s Fernando Verdasco(2) or compatriot Mardy Fish(6) in the finals. 

His 2008 debut here however will begin against either Lucky Loser Dusan Vemic(SRB) or qualifier Sam Warburg(USA).

The Countrywide Classic has been played every year since 1927, entering it’s 82nd year, making it the longest-running annual professional sporting event in Los Angeles. 

 It will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the tournament’s move to UCLA’s campus. 

The tournament is part of the Olympus US Open Series, also known as the Greatest Roadtrip in Sports, which Andy is the two-time champion of.

“Andy is not only the top American tennis player, but one of the top sports personalities in the world,” Tournament Director Bob Kramer said. 

This personality has brought Andy to number one in the world, his fans to their feet at nearly every match, and tournaments eager to have him participate.
